The Best Headache

The moment he opened his lips and spoke there was something captivating in his words. He truly believed every word he was saying. There was an energy around him which was, for the lack of better words, almost angelic… even his face was radiating.

I have met many people with faith before but there was something charismatic about this man. He was a pastor and was leading people to faith and to God.  Now, here he was experiencing a paralyzed arm and leg, the results of a stroke which had been a complication after surgery. He was my patient.

His wife was always by his side. They were exemplifying what a respectful, caring and truly loving relationship is all about. The way they talked to each other, looked at each other and were there for each other was something one doesn’t witness often. Being in their presence equaled being in a presence of a true love. In my nearly three decades of service I remember only a few couples like Michael and his wife. I consider myself fortunate to meet people like them. These couples would show me how true love looks and acts like in trying times.

There was something truly special to their union. Call it what you want. I will say it was their individual faith and relationship with their Creator, from which each one of them drew the strength to support the other. Their inner states influenced each other and they knew about it.

Every time I was at Michael’s bedside, I was inspired. He had such a strong faith. To think of it now, he was a living example of what he was preaching to others. He was man of true core values, integrity and congruency.

I was assigned to do exercises for his paralyzed arm and leg. Working in this “business” for years I have developed an ability to sense and adequately describe what was happening in my patients’ bodies and minds.

During one of those first exercising sessions with Michael as I was holding and moving his paralyzed leg, I could feel tiny parts of his muscle firing. This meant that some connection existed. It was very good news, which I enthusiastically shared with Michael and his wife.

What happened in the next three minutes was nothing short of a shock to all who were present.

That day as I was bending Michael’s leg, his wife was sitting by his side. Suddenly Michael face changed, he was in pain. He told us that he had a bolt of energy going up his spine. He hardly finished his first sentence when suddenly he said, “and now its in my head, ” to which his wife replied, ”Michael, look!!! You are holding your head with your paralyzed hand!!!” We all looked at Micheal’s right arm, and we were shocked. His arm moved in the whole complexity of its motion, and the hand which just seconds earlier had been totally paralyzed, flaccid and unable to perform the smallest of movement, was clearly holding his head.
We were astonished!!!
I sat between Michael and his wife, reached for their hands, and as I was speaking words of gratitude I felt a current of energy flowing through.

From that day on Michael’s recovery progressed rapidly.

To this day, I wonder what happened there that day in that room.
All I know it was the best headache ever.

Impossible to possible!
